Review of Mandola's Italian Market in Arlington, TX (Posted by Amy Glenn, Mar 05,2010)

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. They had their beer and wine license so those drinks were available--maybe the previous poster would find a wine his taste buds like if he went back. :-) It's not Americanized Italian so it may take some people a little getting used to. The bread was fabulous and so was the gelato; our portions were more than any of us could eat so we had no complaints about price. In fact, our only complaint was that we ate so much dinner we didn't have room for any of those fabulous-looking pastries. Next time . . . .

Review of Fried Green Tomatoes in Galena, IL (Posted by Paula Kaufman, Mar 08,2010)

Great place for dinner. All entrees came with soup salad and bread so it was a pleasant surprise. We ate there on a Tuesday and it happened to be half price wine night so we split a bottle. Nice décor and very good staff they even have the little tools to remove the cheese and bread crumbs from your table. We will be back soon.

The best Chinese in Fountain Hills! Small, friendly and cozy. We eat there a couple times a month. Someone in our Remax Sun Properties office eats there most everyday and we're never disappointed. Their lunch Specials are the best deal.

Review of The Upper West in Santa Monica, CA (Posted by Pat Margulies, Mar 09,2010)

We had a lot of fun at this newly opened place.... a party of five including men, a woman of a certain age, and young women too ... some vegetarian, some pasta fanatics, some no-carb, some South Beach AND in spite of the diversity, everyone found more than several things that they'd love to eat.We tried only two appetizers concerned we'd be too full for the dinner -- lamb crepes and the tacos -- both really exquisite. Dinners included: flat iron steak (seriously enjoyed by a serious meat guy), grilled cheese with tomato soup (lovely), shells & cheese (their title for a glorious four-cheese, Asiago and all that good stuff, mac n cheese), the salmon entree (gorgeous and cooked perfectly), and ...... another carnivore eating a sirloin steak. That was me, so I can tell you double wow. Once for the first time I tasted it and then again for when I reheated it the next day -- to me the true test of quality food !!!To me the menu seems like one where even in a large party, everybody could find something they liked. The wine list was really nice and the salmon-eating guy had his fair share of just the house red and liked it a lot -- and he knows the grape! The martinis were very fun... I wanted to try them since another review had mentioned them... I had the cucumber -- delish. I can imagine on a hot day, nothing lovelier! We shared two desserts -- ginger cake with apple compote and creme fraiche and a key lime tart... but a biggish tart! One more thing... I know that cost is cost, but I sincerely felt very good about the final bill and the cost of a rather lavish evening.... I believe we got value beyond what one may be likely to spend elsewhere, and without similar resulting value. It was a really fun evening. I loved the crowd in the room -- women together and out for the evening; old folks, young folks, babies...I understand that the Upper West will soon open for lunch and also weekend brunch. I cannot wait!We all had a lot of fun and wish this restaurant the very best luck -- success already has been reached.

Review of Inn At The Crossroads in Charlottesville, VA (Posted by Susan Singer, Mar 10,2010)

Note- this Inn claims to be affiliated with the “National Trust” and “Historic Hotels”. In fact- their emails either have the notations: " PLEASE NOTE: This email has been sent by the National Trust Historic Hotels Webervations Center" or a signature line that states "Webervations Specialist on behalf of the National Trust Historic Hotels and your innkeepers: Jim and Janet Stern". However when I called the National Trust regarding a complaint- they told me that there is NO affiliation and that these references by the Inn are totally false. .The reason I attempted to contact the National Trust was because of the horendous behavior of the innkeeper- Jim. He actually cursed me out when I questioned his process for cancellations and refunds. You should definitely stay away from this place. I found three other inns in the vicinity with better accomodations and wonderful customer service.

Review of Fish Market in Santa Clara, CA (Posted by Melissa Hunter, Mar 11,2010)

The Fish Market in Santa Clara is a sad tale of self-sabotage. On the surface they seem to have all the perfect elements to what people in California want in a seafood restaurant: fresh fish, prepared simply to experience the taste. Unfortunately, in this tale, these great elements are driven into the ground.First example: fresh fishThe Good:I asked the waitress (who was very pleasant) how fresh the fish was, to which she told me that their policy is that fresh fish brought in can only be held for 3 days. I ordered the pan-seared petrale sole with lemon beurre blanc and when it was brought to my table I could absolutely tell that the fish was fresh and temperature-wise it was cooked perfectly. The lemon beurre blanc was served on the side, to preserve the crispiness of the fish --- a technique I gave them credit for.The Bad: The fish, which I could tell had been dredged in flour, was completely underseasoned and practically swimming in an oil slickThe Ugly: The side of lemon beurre blanc was watery and when I went to stir it I discovered that half of it consisted of chunks of onion sitting on the bottom. But in keeping with the theme the sauce was, also, underseasoned.Second example: fresh preparationThe Good: From where most people sit in the restaurant they can view the chefs preparing the meals. I admire this in a restaurant because it carries the 'fresh' theme from ingredient to presentation, and prevents bad habits such as using frozen fish. The Bad: Understanding that the fish is the star of the meal, I can see that the side dishes wouldn't want to compete with the star attraction. However, given the cost, I definitely expected something other than what I got. 'Parsley potatoes' consisted of two whole, skin-on steamed new potatoes sitting on my plate with a drizzle of melted butter and some parsley flakes. The other side dish, 'basil cherry tomatoes', turned out to be exactly that - raw, out-of-season halved cherry tomatoes with some salt and pepper (the only thing to even remotely being seasoned on the plate). The Ugly: The customer-visible kitchen turned out to be another instance of this restaurant shooting itself in the foot. Nothing says class like paying decent money for a dish where you get to watch the chefs use ice cream scoopers to dish out and plate side dishes --- something I would have expected more from the Denny's nearby. Would I go back again? Maybe. The restaurant has all the right building blocks --- fresh fish, visible presentation, very friendly wait staff. Small, simple changes in delivery can help to really make these benefits shine.

Review of The Rock Restaurant in Normal, IL (Posted by Will Trayner, Mar 11,2010)

Ordered the Philly Cheese it was a good chopped Philly Cheese steak. Nothing compares to the sandwiches out east. But this was a good rendition I will be sure to go back and have another. They are moving down the street near the Junction appartments across from Mcdonalds. I feel this is a small town necessity in a college Campus. Stop by Friendly brothers were working there.
